The castles in the area that the Carruthers family lived, are the castles that defended Scotland for hundreds of years in her defense against England.  These castles also provided the strongholds to defend the area from the Border Reivers from England, who invaded Scotland even when there was not a declared war between the two countries.  Each castle was usually controlled by one family, responsible for manning its walls and keeping that local area of Scotland safe.

These castles are today, in various condition of ruin.  As Historic Scotland, and other organizations, move to restore the castles and continue to educate us of their place in history, their legacy lives on.
